Dominican Baseball Legend Juan Marichal to Be Honorary Starter at GFDD”s 5th Golf Tournament at the Fresh Meadow Country Club in Long Island, NY
September 17, 2014Natasha Despotovic, Executive Director of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), announced that former Major League Baseball Player and long-standing friend of GFDD, Mr. Juan Marichal, will be the Honorary Starter for theFoundation’s5th Golf Tournament, to be celebrated for the 3rd time at the prestigious Fresh Meadow Country Club in Long Island, N.Y. on Monday, September 29th.
This event is part of GFDD’s initiatives to share with its supporters while it promotes fundraising efforts to continue implementing valuable research enhancing public understanding in designing public policies and developing strategies offering capacity building in crucial areas to social, economic, democratic and cultural sustainable development in the Dominican Republic and the Western Hemisphere.
“We are delighted and fortunate to have such a great ambassador and icon of baseball and of the Dominican culture. He has inspired generations of young Dominicans, and having him join us on the first tee will be a special thrill for all our contributors and for his many fans around the world”, said Ms. Despotovic.
Juan Marichal was a former right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. Playing for the San Francisco Giants for 14 of his 16 seasons, Marichal was known for his high leg kick. He also played for the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers for the final two seasons of his career. Mr. Marichal was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.
The Fresh Meadow Country Club is a high-end, private 18-hole golf course located in Long Island, NY. Just 30 minutes away from Manhattan, the legendary golf course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1923. Famous celebrities such as Ty Cob, Joe Lewis and Babe Ruth have all enjoyed the wide, tree-lined fairways, two lakes that form water hazards, lovely scenery every step of the course and small, fast and undulating greens. The club is open from mid-April until mid-October.
GFDD’s Golf Tournament will feature the attendance of special guests, as well as the presence of former President of the Dominican Republic and President of GFDD, Dr. Leonel Fernández. Guests who sign up for the tournament will enjoy a special day of surprises in a relaxing environment.
